Welcome
A quiet month in anticipation of busier times ahead. Again I must
point out the importance of getting yourself noticed. Last week
I was contacted by an old Rob Dobson student who hasn't lived in
Adelaide since 1979.
He has continued on in martial arts with only a short break to
have family and after 4 years with Shigeo Nagayama in Brisbane is
about to grade to Shodan again. His problem is he left all his certificates
and memorabilia in Adelaide with his parents.
They cleaned out when they moved. Now by chance while looking up
the IBF he has found me and arrangements for some exchange of film
etc of our old SAKA tournament days has been made.
Two points, 1. be easy to find, 2. keep all references to your
history, even if it's just to pass on to your kids.
Training Day
Check out the "events"
section for information about our second training day on Sunday
April the 6th hosted by Karol Stojko's club. It should be interesting
with some insight into "Bowey Knife" training from the
old days. We really would like to see as many as possible.
The last one was very successful but if you want your community
to grow and to broaden your interaction with other styles in a safe
and friendly environment please invite others.
Let's invite some kung-fu, silat, judo, jujitsu and aikido practitioners
along.
I am currently working toward a training day on weapons techniques
later in the year so collect those broom handles and sticks.
Terry Riches, President IBF aust. will be flying over as a guest
instructor on the day also.
Hanshi Tony Jackson
Tony has been involved with many of us for over 30 years and is
holding a training camp in WA in August. Karol Stojko, Glen Middleton,
Dante Roccisano and myself will be attending so have a look in the
"events" section and see if it's for you. (check www.littleforestway.com
)
Insurance
We will have a representative for insurance at the training day.
After some research there seems to be a vast difference of opinion
as to what cover you need and the costs associated. The local broker
I found would have difficulty in giving the best prices on an individual
basis but does have the advantage of monthly instalments to help
your budgets.]
Support
In some other organisations sponsors have been ignored and their
input taken for granted.
Phil Kern has supported us by maintaining this site and keeps it
updated. As you can see by the work he has done he makes us look
professional and because it is kept updated people come back to
browse, so they see you more often.
Personally Phil
has saved me in the vicinity of $150 a month on my phone and internet
bills, that covers the interest rate rise! I have found
better reception and far more benefits with my hand set also. So
seriously consider giving him a call if
you're going to change at all, he's helping you so lets help him.
On top of that he has put me onto other sponsors so there should
be more benefits coming for you.
Your details on the www.sa.ibf.com.au
page shows your support for the organisation and its policies. In
return we are giving the public a reference point to find you as
a reputable instructor. Check we have your links and information
correct and please check those links to www.ibf.com.au
on your website are working.
Eventually we will have other pages for members interstate to do
the same but for now I'm looking after the important people :.
Often you will see us encourage activity with other groups or events.
They may not be members (at this time) but our policy is to encourage
good relations between martial artists so your network is stronger
and there is growth within our community. Nothing better than being
out for the night and recognising other members, better conversation
and safer environment.
Child Protection Policy
Recently I have had many young students join my club. Many of you
may have policies in place but I must encourage you to check out
the IBF
Aust. policy on the main site for
a reference. This is often a requirement for school activities etc.
so protect them and protect yourself.
Pass books
Remember to bring them along and any evidence of recent participation
in seminars or grading so it can be entered.
History
Got some footage or photos of old days here in the martial arts.
I hope to show some at the training day of Yushiro Koenishi demonstrating
techniques, old style sparring and some SAKA tournament footage
from 1978. Of course there is a bias in what I have from Rob Dobson
days but perhaps you have some also of your old instructors to show.
It would be good to get some of these discs together and build a
virtual museum.
First Aid
It is good practice and a requirement in some organisations to have
a current first aid certificate. Those who need help with this please
contact me.
NAS
Went along to the NAS tournament in Campbelltown and saw Mick Murphy
and his guys performing. The boys all did well. This was Kevin's
first event and I watched him nervously take the floor to do his
kata. Didn't miss a beat, good foot angles, good application and
focus, it was over in a flash. So I think we all said the same afterwards,
"breathe Kevin, breathe"!
Titles
I'm in sales and some of those I meet ... blimey. Some years back
I had a character who when I addressed him as "Mr." he
pointed out to me he had done studies for 6years in university etc.
to be titled "Dr." and would prefer to be called by the
title he deserved. I promptly said "not a problem, you can
call me Shihan Kym because I have studied in my field for 33years"
Titles can be confusing for some and Dan grades are like the exchange
rate of the dollar, some are worth more than others.
I haven't used titles in most cases because I treat you all as martial
artists first, however if you think this is disrespectful please
let me know.
I look forward to seeing you at the training
day, 9.30am Sunday 6th of April 2008.
