Hello,
We are another year older and wiser, a quiet month as usual for this time of the year.
Nationally we have a huge year planned with seminars in NSW, QLD, ACT and S.A so keep in touch via the Web and Facebook sites.
We have many affiliated organisations and a broad range of members from traditional martial arts to full on MMA. We have run various competitions and seminars across the country. If you would like to promote an event, please send an email about the training or workshop day you intend to run and we will promote it via our website or on Facebook.
Hopefully in the future we may organize access to the website so that you can put things up yourself like news articles or gradings etc.
Remember if you do not have your own certificates to give for gradings the IBF has it's own quite cheap for members. If you do not have your own website and would like one, please contact Shihan Kym Reid for assistance, he may even do one for you at a very good rate.
We get invited to train and compete all over the world and I would love to send an IBF Australian team overseas at some stage in the future so we will continue with building the competition circuit and finding the right people.
We are now in 4 states and working towards a 5th (not including A.C.T.) I have now been given authority to manage the whole Oceania region, so if anyone knows of any competent martial artist within the region that might want to head up the I.B.F within their country please contact myself.
SAVE MONEY … After some consideration we have decided that the $100 membership fee will be waived for any member introducing a new school that takes a full paid membership by April 1st. Jump in and help your organisation and save some money.
Welcome to latest members Karl Thornton (MDTA of Vic.) and Glen Doecke (Makoto Ryu Karate Do of SA)
There are so many people that I have to thank for the work that they have been doing for the I.B.F. that it's impossible to put all their names down here, except for Shihan Kym Reid. He has done so much it would be a crime not to mention and thank him. Thanks Kym.
Respectfully Yours

As with the beginning of every year it starts quiet and then it’s full on. Many of the members have been back to training for a few weeks lately and have had the usual influx of enquiries. Please be sure to direct the public to the right clubs if you don’t fit their criteria. I have many enquiries in my area for clubs that take 4 to 7 year olds. I don’t cater for them so I have always directed them to local clubs of good repute and with reasonable fee’s and standards.
One of them I am happy to say is our newest IBF Australia member, Glen Doecke of Makoto Ryu Karate Do. I have known Glen for some time and, unknown to me at the time, we had both attended a Jan De Jong seminar held by our friend Graham Dunn in 1991. Glen has 9 branches from Echunga to Pt Broughton area. I wish him all the best and welcome him aboard.
Due to an overload of events for the initial date, the SA training day will now be on the weekend of April 28-29. Details will be up ASAP.
Thanks for the mention Terry. Most know how busy Terry is with nearly every weekend judging, refereeing, seminars and sitting in meetings to make things happen for the members. So when he says a year older and wiser he actually means “starting to feel the aches and pain of training gone by” He definately should have more recognition and I'm proud to be helping with the IBF Australia.
Kind Regards

Well here we are already in January of a brand new year. The IBF has so much on the go that I can barely keep up. In QLD my first time as host of an IBF training day on the 15th of April is fast approaching. The presenters are just about finalised and we have a lot of interest around the traps. It is shaping up to be a great day and I hope everyone will see as I did how much the IBF has to offer and get themselves signed up. We all need to look after our own little patch, that’s obvious. But equally obvious is the need for a multi-style no politics organisation like the IBF that helps us all to grow our network of contacts, takes care of the big picture in insurance and makes us all stronger by being part of something bigger. In diversity there is strength and that will be the theme at the training day. It should be obvious by the time the day is over and we have all had a go at everything from hapkido to silat to kenpo to S.P.E.A.R … AND we all have a whole new bunch of friends in the martial arts community. That is after all what it’s really all about. SO keep an eye out on the website for the flyer, cheers and have an excellent 2012!!
Regards

We had a quiet couple of months this time with. One event was a cage fight, Wollongong Wars 1, where there were I.B.F. / Oz Warriors fighters on the card from 3 different schools. The promotor was Joe Lopez from Windang, an Oz Warrior school, the event was a great success. All of the IBF members who fought were 1st timers to the cage, Kevin from Nowra gym lost but got fight of the night. Nimrod from Mt Druitt gym, lost against a much bigger guy and Dave Fowler from Highlands MMA won, Dave only just turned 18 the week before. All 3 fighters fought more experienced opponents. Also below is a report from State President Terry Williams of a fantastic event that started with an expectation of about 30 - 40 competitors. Read his report and imagine the extreme efforts needed to cope with a full on week end.
Looking forward to the next show, and catching up with some friends in Adelaide soon.

Oz Warrior Wrestling Club - Takedown Competition 11th March 2012
The club held a Takedown competition as part of a larger competition the “Illawarra Grappling Cup”. The Takedown event consisted of a wrestling style competition but minus the groundwork associated with Olympic Freestyle wrestling. The object was to score up to 3 takedowns within 2 minutes to win.
The Takedown competition was commented upon as being the highlight of the day for both spectators and competitors. We used a 9x9 jigsaw mat area which was adequate, a regular Olympic style wrestling mat would be ideal for future competitions
Rules can be found at http://ozwarrior.com/wrestling/ A highlight video can be found above.
Competitors
The total number of competitors of the Illawarra Grappling cup was approximately 140 with around 60 of those participating in the Takedown division. There were 12 Takedown divisions with the median age of entrants at 23 years old.
In total 15 clubs participated in the takedown competition. All of the clubs in the competition run a wrestling class at least once per week in their facilities. Only one club was registered
with NSW Wrestling and that was the host club OZ Warrior Wrestling.
Financials
Funding for the competition was provided solely by the OZ Warrior wrestling club president Terry Williams. No sponsorship or government money was used in the event. Medal purchase, hall hire, referee disbursement and floor mats were all privately funded. The event fee was able to recover fees paid for the day.
Recommendations
I recommend that NSW consider supporting this type of competition to help expand wrestling in NSW and also to help expand wrestling club members in NSW. The Oz Warrior Wrestling Club is able to help progress this sport and develop a strong circuit.
Kind Regards
Terry Williams

Things have moved quietly in SA but many of us enjoyed a training session with Jason Griffiths at a recent KU seminar. The focus has been on 2 major events (1) the IBF Training Day 28th of April and (2) the Fight for Life Seminar in support of Kevin Walsh’s efforts to raise money and awareness in the fight against cancer. Such a great idea to have a cause that above politics and ego’s. He has now moved to make it easier for everyone to participate by running this in local area’s prior to the premier event on Nov. 10th in Melbourne. The great thing is that it has now gone global with events during the same weeks being held not just in Australia but also in the UK, Germany, USA and many other countries. Think about it. You can have fun and also support a worthy cause. A lot more will come out prior to the event so Kevin will need sponsors and participants and conveners so if you’re in an isolated community you can still be a part of this Martial Art community event. In WA Ramon Lawrence and Nigel Farrier are the organizers, I have taken on SA and Peter Hills of Qld. has put his name up also. Is anyone in NSW prepared to help? Give Kevin a call.
Congratulations have to go to Ricky Armedeous who successfully defended his gold medal win from last year with another one this year at the Judo State Titles on Sat 17 March. Dante Roccisano’s Aikijitsu Australia club bagged 3 Gold’s and his son Ricky also fought in the open Division and won a Silver, a great effort.
I look forward to catching up with President Terry Riches at our Training Day in April along with Marc Miller, who has many years experience in Judo, Shawn Donaldson the first Blackbelt in KU here in SA and owner of the Ozbudo Forum (which is finally backup) and also this will be the first time for Dave Gartland as he shares his Ed Parker Kenpo. Mick Murphy will be taking a session and thanks should go to Tracy and Damien Ellis for arranging the use of their venue and new mats.
QLD
Peter Hills will be running his first IBF Training day on April the 15th. Some of those who have jumped in to support him are my friends Suzanne and Don Woods of Speakman’s kenpo Karate, Jason Griffiths of KU, Ivan McWilliams of Kemka Silat and James Shang with PDR and explanation of the Spear system.
Kind Regards

On the 28th S.A. I attended the seminar in Adelaide where over 80 people turned up, There were many different instructors and styles contributing and the good thing about this seminar was the number of new dojo’s and schools attending which was great to see. We have also grown nationally and we now have a very wide range of styles within the I.B.F. family of martial arts. My section of the seminar was to teach some Sambo techniques, so I concentrated on Sambo leg locks, as we had other Judoka’s teaching throws and transitions. We had so many attend that we had to have some of the group train outside, with the sunny weather helping us out there. The broad range of instructors and arts we now have within the I.B.F. family makes for a very diverse and interesting seminar circuit. I would like to thanks Tracy and Damien Ellis for hosting this event and as always our very busy Vice President Shihan Kym Reid, without who this event would not have happened. Thank you all for inviting me again to S.A. and I look forward to catching up with you all in the future.

The month of April has been very busy. It is great to have many friends come on board including Jason Griffiths and John Cook and Jeff Barnes of the Szlagowski Karate Association. Marc Miller is a great addition to the Oz Warrior arm of the IBF.
It was fantastic to see all our friends support Peter Hills with his first training day, a great effort and more people than I had at my first. Peter has also put his hand up to hold a fund raiser at the end of the year for cancer research as part of the global “Fight For Life” campaign created by Kevin Walsh. I personally will be running it in SA.
On the 28th of April we held another training day here. Terry R. had to fly out on the Sunday so it needed to be held on a Saturday. This meant finding another venue and Tracy and Damien Ellis jumped in and offered to host it at West Beach. Although smaller it bought it closer to the Southern participants. With all this in mind I didn’t send out the usual emails and kept things low key. As expected many had to run their own clubs and others were working. Great, 40 was about all I could see getting in the hall. The day started of great, a few new names rang to make sure it would be ok to attend and asking for directions. Tracey had Ann there as the medico and support. So all was going well, until the people at the door just kept coming.
I had waivers for 70, drinks for 72 and room for 40! At the break I counted up about 60, but all the forms were filled, the drinks gone? It’s when I looked at the photo I realized there were over 80 on the day thanks to all our supporters. To begin with was Terry Riches teaching Sambo takedowns and Mick Murphy with nunchaku (we had to send them onto the basketball court to have some room) Next was Marc Miller demonstrating a Judo Kata and then taking his group through throws while Shawn Donaldson put people through their paces with Koryu Uchinadi drills.
The next session David Gartland in his usual dynamic fashion gave an insight and some drills of Ed Parkers Kenpo while Damien Ellis had people scrambling with reactionary drills to get the hearts pumping. I shared the time with him to give a few techniques for the closer fighting system. During the break Dante jumped on the mat for a play and once Tracy had returned with the pizza we all took time out to introduce people to each other including 2 spectators who I was happy to have there, Hans Van Gelder and Adrian Hitch. After the break we all did it again. I must thank Brett Harrison and Ant’z Veen’s Zanshin Freestyle guys for continuing to support our events. It was good to see some of Nino Pilla’s students enjoying themselves as was Ivan McWilliams from Qld. Another group was an awesome lot of big scary fellows with Jim Nixon of Kombat Jujutsu. These guys loved slamming each other into the mats and joined in everything. They turned out to the nicest bunch of guys and a credit to Jim. The clue to the strong “man handling” became obvious once Jim explained they were Rugby players!
A big thankyou to Terry for coming over. On the Saturday night out with Marc Miller he got a taste of the typical SA taxi service in the suburbs as we waited, for which I pointed out would and proved to be correct, over an hour.
Sorry if I missed or forgot to credit anyone who was there but I was so motivated that the next day I booked a double court at the Golden Grove Recreation centre to hold the Fight For Life Seminar on Sunday October 28th ahead of Kevin Walsh’s main event on the 10th of November. Remember if everyone who came to the training day bought 1 more person, if the absentee’s come along and other organizations show support for this great cause we should have over 200 people for this event. More about this soon.
Thanks again
Kym Reid.

Exhausted but happy! April 15th: What a great day of training and learning together and many new friendships made!
Many thanks to our presenters: Sue and Don Woods from Speakman Kenpo, Ivan McWilliams from Kemka Silat, Jim Shang from Shang Martial arts and myself, David Thompson, Glen Wallis and Josh Magar from Aiki Kenpo Jujutsu.
Jason Griffiths was unable to make it due to a particularly nasty tummy bug, but fortunately Hanshi McCarthy was able give his time, stepping onto the mat to demonstrate Koryu Uchinadi techniques and concepts. Also present were representatives from Bujinkan Ninjutsu, Gendai Shinka Jujutsu in Biloela, Wynnum and Beenleigh. Altogether 40 martial artists attended. Not a bad start I say.
From all reports the SA training day on April the 28th was a stunning success. Wonderful! It is great to see this idea flourishing and growing!
Last weekend we had local members competing in a caged no-gi grappling event (Lockdown 4). A modest start with one pulled out injured before the day, one 4th and one 3rd. Yes, a modest start, but hopefully the beginning of something much bigger with a group of like-minded enthusiasts committing to regular training and competition appearances.
Our next multi-style training day is a two day event, July the 7th and 8th. Anyone local who is reading this, don't be shy, give me a buzz on 0400 119 340 and find out the details. Anyone planning to come please let me know. EVERYONE is welcome! The Saturday will be a series of presentations focusing on traditional style martial arts. The Sunday will be all about combat sport forms of the martial arts. This will be a great weekend. Make plans to support this and help build the QLD IBF grassroots movement. I will send out info soon.
We are also planning on supporting Kevin Walsh's Fight For Life concept, joining the now worldwide series of demonstration and training days in October dedicated to fund-raising for cancer research. I am expecting martial artists of all persuasions to get behind this.
OSU!
Peter Hills.
