Welcome.

At the end of August I took a flight to Western Australia to attend a training camp and spent a week with Phil Barker. Phil moved to Perth from S.A after a medical proceedure put him into a wheelchair with no prospect of walking again.  I asked if his martial arts training had helped in any way. He said it played an important part in his rehabilitation, helping with his focus and motivation. It strengthened his faith and while he no-longer can take the risk of training, he has proved the medics wrong and is up and extremely active helping others at the Victory Life Centre. We thank him for taking on the role of Vice- President of W.A and assisting Paul Marston to develop the martial arts community there.

Dante Roccisano in the 1990's suffered a major stroke. At the time he was well known as a Shaolin Kung Fu instructor of 20 years standing but not many people knew he had trained in judo and various styles since 1958. After a year of rehabilitation he decided to get back his body by re-training and re-grading in the martial arts. Through his judo and jujitsu he achieved 95% recovery and focus's on "minimal movement" techniques in aiki-jujitsu. He attributes this entirely on his previous martial arts training and has since been accepted into the Australian Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

A woman came to me and told me she was a Brown Belt in karate after 9 months of training but became concerned when the instructor offered to back-date her certificates by 2 years to speed up her grading to Blackbelt. After checking with a peer organisation she realized the grading wouldn't have creditability and left. After a year training at another club she has achieved an orange belt and now understands the years of dilligent training needed to become a blackbelt, your reaction needs to be automatic for a lifetime and not just  for a grading day.

I think you can understand from the stories above that its not the blackbelt on the waist but the blackbelt in the person that manifests itself, if it's not earned its only a fashion accessory.

WA News
Tony Jackson's training camp went well. It was great to meet instructors from all over Australia and overseas joining in to share their techniques and philosophies. Karol Stojko, Dante Roccisano and I ran several training sessions with some of Australia's best instructors of various styles.
It was good to expand the network of friendships within the martial arts community. We enjoyed the Martial Arts Group of W.A 's camp and meeting members of the Shihan Kai.

Phil Barker and I caught up with W.A president Paul Marston. There he was trying to squeeze in his lunch between training sessions. A great set-up as a full time training venue with 2 matted area's and a ring. Interesting to see the boys doing their mma drills in one area, 2 guys in the ring and at the same time the flowing Aikido training happening in the other area. Paul also hosts a martial arts segment on radio Sunday afternoons and is involved with an instructors group. Lets hope we hear more from these guys soon (if there's time!).

Later on the flight back to S.A over 20 karateka boarded for Adelaide to attend the "Karate Union of Australia" nationals. I had to be in
W.A. hear of it. Had we known of it perhaps we could have got it advertised. I hope the benefits of a network can now be seen, IBF Australia!

SA News
We have had a very busy month with several of us going to Perth, then a training session at Tracy Ellis's club. After that we had Sifu David Crook from Canberra over here so we cornered him into running a training session at Karol Stojko's club. Karols back prevented him from attending but his senior boys did a good job of hosting David. It was good to train in techniques from a chinese style and and sharing in training drills.

Watch the "Events" section! It's a busy schedule coming up.
On Sunday November the 2nd we have another training day with a "Defence to Weapons" theme at the Burragh Centre. Many instructors have asked to contribute and I am happy to have Leo Richards of the AJJA attending, George Lee and Chris Gillies will also be attending. Steve Miranda, Dante Roccisano and Karol Stojko will have some input.
With George Lee offering his services I think the 2009 training day will be something special for everyone. I had the next training day lined up as a combined IBF Australia and AJJA session and now with George Lee and David Crook as instructors of "Chin na" offering to share their knowledge I think it will all come together well to show the different grab and locking styles.

In 2010 Karol and I have given an obligation to host the next Martial Arts Group training camp, hopefully in the Barossa but West Beach is another option.

General
Each state has some "world class" instructors willing to give their time locally. Not everyone can afford the time or finances to travel interstate to attend expensive seminars and pay for accommodation and transport.
There is value in holding local training days in communities, north and south of the cities and in the country area's.
I hope some of the other state reps will take this on board and become  active supporters of the "Better Martial Arts community" by building the network of good martial artists in your area.

Thankyou
