New Website
Welcome to the new look website. With a lot of help from Phil Kern I have put this site together with the hope of keeping it updated regularly. Eventually we hope the public will know to look here to find your club and your website and also have information to make a choice. Also it will be a source for information to help the members and hopefully bring together those who wish to further themselves in the world of Budo.
It's been awhile since Terry Riches wrote his newsletter but I'd like to thank him for his kind words and for entrusting me with the role as Vice-president of the IBF Australia.
For those who don't know me I believe in making things happen and that an organisation should be promoting the members and martial arts actively. It is on this note that I encourage members to support good local clubs whether they are members or not and encourage interaction. Building a good network will ensure the domination of legitimate instructors in all styles and the future of martial arts for your students and club.
First of all a thank-you to Terry Riches for his time and interaction over here. It was a good week-end which gave us the opportunity to also expand our network with friends in the Koshiki organisation. At our next SA training day soon to be announced I have a physio-therapy group coming along to offer advise and they have given me a pile of vouchers to hand out. It took one call and a little negotiation. I hope to have a combined Australian Jujitsu Association and IBF training day after that. They aren't all members of our association but they are still part of the community we're trying to build, I'm sure Terry enjoys his time within judo circles as much as within the IBF.
WA News
At the end of August I'm off to Western Australia to attend a training camp with Tony Jackson and a stop over with Phil Barker. I'd like to say thank-you to Paul Marston for the invite to train at his dojo, I didn't know he ran a martial arts radio program over there, did you? Drop in and say hello when you visit the west. There are some others I'll be visiting over there but I'll wait till the next letter for that.
SA News
Congratulations to Steve Miranda on his promotion within his organisation to Professor 8th Dan. The event was celebrated at the Hilton hotel and my partner and I were totally entertained at Steve's invitation. There were 175 people in attendance who enjoyed his demonstrations, the comedian and the live band afterwards. We didn't attend as ambassadors of the IBF but as friends in the martial arts. We can only hope that perhaps we could have an awards night one day of the same magnitude.
Thankyou also to Mick Murphy for the invite to his clubs grading day. Over 40 people graded, the standard was excellent and all the kids did well in the freezing conditions. The IBF awarded young Sam Upton with a book for his total focus and efforts on the day. Mick also stood out with an outstanding demonstration with the sword.
Visit by Sifu David Crook
Today I had contact from Canberra based Sifu David Crook. He'll be coming to Adelaide in September and will be attending a training day at Karol Stojko's club. I found him to be a great person to chat with and has a lot of knowledge and historical information to pass on. I also thank David for the training course material he sent. He has written many articles for magazines and is National Vice-president of the Australian Kung Fu & Wu Shu Federation and pioneered Officer Survival training in the Aust. Federal Police Force in the mid-70's. Another fellow martial artist to call in on when travelling through Canberra.
General
Being a South Australian things may seem a little bias for a while but you can help by giving your state presidents some support and feed back so that they may put forward some local events and news also.
What can you do for your Budo Buddies? Are you a leader? Can you network? Help us to help you and get involved now.
Thankyou
Kym Reid
Vice-President.
